Because I feel extremely wretched and I can't work or do anything useful, I've been thinking about that "last Beatles' album" thing I posted the other day, and realized I hadn't posted my version. (This was a last Beatles album composed of solo projects they were doing at the time -- post Abbey Road/Let It Be.)

I enjoyed the version called "Everest" that someone posted on the interwebz -- I'm sure there's more than one, but the one I remember went:

I have a few disagreements, though, both in choices and running order, as follows:

In my personal (and slightly feverish, at least today) world of imagination I still have to deal with certain things that seem true to me, so I have a feeling that George still wouldn't get as many songs as he'd have liked to have on a Beatles album, as usual -- which is why he had two full albums worth of material in the can waiting for his first solo project. With a last Beatles album, and having to fight for space on the record, I suspect he'd save a few of them like "My Sweet Lord" for that solo project. I also removed "All Things Must Pass" because I'm guessing would have wanted that for the title of his solo album, so he'd save the song, too. (I considered substituting "Awaiting on You All", which is a great song, but it takes some swipes at Lennon in the lyrics and that doesn't seem to fit with the spirit of a last Beatles album.

However, because we've taken away so many George songs, I wanted a Beatles-oriented George song to replace them, so I took "Apple Scruffs" -- about the girls who used to hang around the Apple offices -- and slid that in instead.

Similarly, "God" and "Working Class Hero" are much more Lennon solo tracks to me than Beatles-type songs, and "God" is basically his Beatles-are-finished song, so I don't think it would make it onto a last B's album.

"Early 1970" is a very minor little Ringo song, the flip-side to "It Don't Come Easy", and it's about him hanging out with his Beatles friends, which seems appropriate, but it's far too minor and silly a song even from Mr. Yellow Submarine/Octopus' Garden to make a last Beatles album. We'll let him keep "Don't Come Easy," which (as with other Ringo songs) will make a perfectly good lead-in for Side 2, where it is a delayed continuation of "What Is Life", with which it bears much in common musically.

I also think McCartney would have come up with at least one more big production song for an actual Beatles album, so after considering carefully I've brought forward "Too Many People" off Ram (Considered "Uncle Albert" but it's very clearly part of his later process of medley'd songs) and removed "Maybe I'm Amazed", because as great a song as "Maybe" is, it's like "Sweet Lord" -- so very familiar, and more likely to have been retained by the writer as a solo piece, in my humble opinion. (Also for balance of the album.) I've left in "Junk" as the kind of diddly little melodic Paul song (Mother Nature's Son, etc.) that would make its way onto an album as a change of pace.

John's "Instant Karma" becomes the best song to end such an album, with its long fade-out and chorus of "We all shine on…!" but I've bookended it by leading off the album with "Cold Turkey", which not only shares initials and jaggedness with John's classic album-starter Come Together, but shows the other side of what John was doing then, pushing away from "pretty music" into a more expressive, raw form.

Balancing for sound and dynamics and trying not to put too many songs by the same writer together (except for Junk and Too Many People, which in my imagination McCartney runs together into a medley for this album) we come up with a final running order of:

Side One

What Is Life

Side Two

It Don't Come Easy
That Would Be Something
Beware of Darkness
Junk
Too Many People
Instant Karma

That feels almost like an actual Beatles album to me. If I was going to put Maybe I'm Amazed back on the album, it would come between Apple Scruffs and Love.

Lovely balance there. But I _would_ put Maybe I'm Amazed back. Paul deserves a biggie on Side One, and Every Night, though appropriately Beatley, is a bit too whimsical to qualify, I reckon.

I would really love it if the Anthology 3 acoust…ic version of All Things Must Pass could close after Instant Karma -- it has a "The End" quality. But I understand your reasoning for keeping it off. Perhaps the acoustic version _could_ have closed the Last Beatles Album, and he still could've used the big production job as an opener and title for his solo project... A Georgeish sense of flow might justify that...

That's indeed a great album, maybe it is in an alternate universe where The Beatles stayed together a couple more years, maybe with a different manager than the proposed Allen Klein, by McCartney. I do think the songs would shine a bit mor…e with George Martin producing, especially Lennon's, who didn't put much into the production of his solo career until Double Fantasy. I don't care much for the Phil Specter production, though I love the songs.

Leslie Evers I'd like to listen to that mix and while listening, fantasize that the Beatles never broke up but in fact it happened when we were in effing jr. high and every day I still can't believe it. Feel better soon.

An interesting exercise! I agree with you about how some of the songs would not have even existed if they had remained together for one more album. A few comments:

"Cold Turkey" was originally offered by John for the Beatles but Paul sai…d no. That's why John did it on his own. It was released around the time of Abbey Road and before Let it Be, so it predates all these other songs. Don''t think it would be there for those reasons.

"Teddy Boy" is a possibility. They're seen practicing it in the "Let it Be" movie.

"That Would Be Something" would probably be vetoed by the others for being too simple.

But hey, you never know what might have happened.

Steve Woodford Ringo was underated as a singer, because the other 3 were singer songwriters and had the most input into the LP's. recommend Ringo's first solo album "Beacoups of Blues". They were all very talented Musicians and I am glad that i was growing up at the same time, and still get hours of enjoyment from them now.

Tad Williams I actually listened to that mix last night, in between waves of departing cold, and it sounds almost like a record. Chris, we'll compromise -- we'll say that the single (like the old days, when they didn't automatically put it on an album) would have been "Maybe I'm Amazed" backed by "Oh, Yoko" -- a twin paean to their respective ladies. Then both songs show up on the remixed 90s-era re-release. Problem solved!
